The PCI SAFe Training Team recently delivered its third virtual class, this time SAFe for Government 5.0. This marks our third in two respects: third overall class delivered remotely, and third different course delivered remotely, SAFe PO/PM and SAFe Scrum Master being our first two. We have some additional learnings we’d like to share.

Virtual SAFe® Training Lessons Learned

May 4, 2020

By: Molly Shepard, Sec+ and Tim Schwamb, CISSP

The PCI SAFe® Training Team recently held both a SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager 5.0 course and a SAFe Scrum Master 5.0 course virtually for one of our government customers and we wanted to share some of our successes and lessons learned.

Overall, the classes went extremely well – better than we anticipated  because we spent a significant amount of time planning up front.  As such, we’ll hit six major points:  The platform, the breakout activities, end-of-lesson quizzes, the PI Planning simulation, learner feedback, and post-training coaching.

Understanding Agile Framework

December 26, 2019

By: Tim Schwamb, Colorado Operations Lead

Many government programs are looking to go Agile, but there are so many Agile Frameworks and terms floating around out there, that it’s hard to make sense of it all – Scrum, Kanban, Lean, DevSecOps, XP…Which one is best?  Where do I start?

That feeling of being overwhelmed reminds me of looking for a shelter system for backpacking.  A couple of years ago, I was looking for a backpacking shelter, and I quickly felt overwhelmed:  Do I want a tent, or a tarp, or a mid, or maybe a hammock.  Or…wait…what’s a mid??  And what material is best?  Sil-nylon?  Cuben Fiber?  How do I decide?  I felt like my head was about to explode!  Finally, I found a “backpacking shelters for dummies” that put it in language I could understand and make the necessary tradeoffs.

So, let’s try that with Agile.  Let’s break down each one so you can make sense of it all.

New Research Shows Smart Devices May Make You More Vulnerable to Hackers - But, Don't Panic

Nov 15, 2019

I’m sure by now many of you have read one of the recent articles discussing the ability to control voice assistants with lasers that easily pass through windows. Research Hackers have proven that they can – essentially – replay voice commands silently by simply having them ‘vibrate’ the microphone via the photo-acoustic effect.

Pretty fascinating. But it also can sound pretty scary. I think these articles can be a bit alarmist. There are some practical things we can do to protect our home and family.
